I Hate Microsoft for Creating the Surface Pro 3

Right now I’m hating Microsoft. Why? Cuz they built a machine that I couldn’t live without. It was so compelling that I rushed to upgrade - take my money, MSFT! I love you and I hate you! : )

All jokes aside, here’s just a few reasons why the Surface Pro 3 (SPro3) is so awesome. This is from the perspective of a super-happy Surface Pro 1 (SPro1) owner. Although the SPro3 has advantages over both its predecessors, it’s a huge upgrade for someone like me, much more so than someone upgrading from the Pro 2. Yes, I could have lived with what I had, but the new stuff was just too appealing:

Size & Weight - Technically speaking, the SPro3 is only slighter lighter than the SPro1. But the important distinction is that the weight distribution feels better thanks to the SPro3’s new size.

  • The SPro3 now has a 3:2 ratio. Not only is my tablet now more like a real-world legal pad, but my ebook reading is now more real-world as well. Also, when I’m doing all my OneNote diagramming, I’ve got much better spacing.

Pen – Everyone know’s I’m a pen/digital ink/OneNote fanatic. So I was nervous when I heard about the switch from Wacom to N-Trig. But this article schooled me and helped calm my fears. So now I get to experience the following pen-apalooza of magic awesomeness:

  • Click for OneNote – one click of the pen, and I’m taking to OneNote from wherever I am. As someone who lives & breathes the beauty of OneNote, this is awesome sauce. And when I say “where I am”, this includes a SLEEP state! Update: while most articles/videos will demo this feature showing OneNote MX (the metro version) starting up, a recent update now allows you to tell your computer which version you want to use – the FREE Metro version or the FREE desktop version. #LOVE : )
  • Screen Clips – This is a PRO-DUCT-IV-IT-Y-BOOST-ER!!!! With 2 clicks, I can take a screenshot of whatever I’m looking at. And [don’t miss this] that includes the Metro side of Windows 8 as well! So no more Share –> Save as Screenshot, or Devices – Send to OneNote. #TheFutureIsNow [Demo video coming soon]
  • More precise – Yes, the N-Trig pen, among other things, is more precise thanks to all the work Microsoft put into it. From better screen edge writing, to the lovely way that your writing appears to come from the tip of the pen (like in the real world), and not a eerie millimeter-ish distance away.

Battery Life – You SPro2 folks have already been experiencing better battery life (about 8 hrs) than my SPro1 (about 5.5 hrs). Now I get to live long and prosper as well, plus about an hour (about 9 hours). #FTW

Kickstand – I usually like that angle you get when you lay your tablet on a paperback book of about 100 pages or so. Now I can get that with the super flexible new kickstand. I’m nervous how long that hinge will last, but for now I’m loving it.

There will certainly be more info to come, but for now I’m going to sit back and write a poem in OneNote about how I hate myself for being addicted to the Surface Pro. Darn you, Microsoft… you are my hero…  : )
